ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Summer is winding down, and that means fair season is in full swing. The Alaska State Fair brought all the stops to Palmer, including games, rides and food for all who chose to attend.
Planning for the fair takes the entire year, and that effort paid off when the state fair opened its gates to crowds of excited fairgoers Friday. “It’s the culmination of an Alaskan summer. Nearing the end of the summer, schools getting back in session, it’s like everyone feels right about this,” CEO of the Alaska State Fair, Jeff Curtis, said. This year, the fair is bringing a bit of a learning experience, included in admission, to the grounds with the Da Vinci Exhibit. ”This is a museum-quality exhibit you might see in some of the big city museums. We were fortunate, through a lot of work and effort, to secure this exhibition and bring it to the Alaska State Fair,” Curtis said. This year, the fair has added some new food vendors to its roster, rounding out at around 70 vendors, each with their own flair and flavor they can offer those walking the trails of the fairgrounds. “You got seafood, you got your good old-fashioned burger and corn dogs. You got oysters. I just had a little snack, which was a fried Peach with some ice cream in the middle,” Curtis said. Those who are planning on visiting the fair should not that construction is still ongoing on the Glenn Highway. The Alaska Department of Transportation said there are speed reductions in place as shoulder work continues around the Knik Bridge. And the new traffic signals installed between the Glenn-Parks interchange and the fairgrounds will remain offline until after the fair.
