Six on Your Side has learned that two state agencies are sniffing around the chaos enveloping the Circleville Police Department, but the extent of their involve

The state auditor's special investigative unit is checking through a mound of documents they obtained from city officials. A staffer with the regional auditor's office was contacted about potential problems in the city of about 15,000 and informed investigators in Columbus.is “looking into these issues," said a spokesman for Gov. Mike DeWine. The 10-member group is appointed by the governor, subject to approval by the Ohio Senate.

ABC6 News also has discovered that the state placed four Circleville police officers on "cease function" status because they failed to complete state-mandated training. They were sent warning letters electronically at the end of 2023 and then notified on Jan. 8 of their "cease function" status. That means "a peace officer or trooper who, in any calendar year, fails to comply with the requirements by year-end must immediately cease carrying a firearm and shall cease performing the functions of a peace officer," says theThe continuing training - funded and mandated by the state legislature - includes such topics as responding to mental health issues, crisis mitigation and de-escalation, and victim rights.

Dan Tierney of the governor's office noted that a new voluntary accreditation program being set up by the governor's office "will resolve some of these issues on standards when fully implemented.""We can say the auditor’s office has obtained information from city officials related to the police controversy, and they are reviewing it to see if anything is worthy of delving into more deeply," said spokesman Matthew Eiselstein.
