Starkiller vs Darth Vader in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Nearly 18 years after it was released, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is finally making a canon comeback this year. The Force Unleashed is one of the best and most beloved Star Wars games ever made, but the series ended with its second installment in 2010.
Since Disney reclassified the Extended Universe as Star Wars Legends, the story of Galen Marek, aka Starkiller, has never been continued. Though the games were divisive at launch, The Force Unleashed has become a beloved part of Star Wars history for many fans. There were even rumors some years ago that The Force Unleashed 3 would eventually be released, which got many gamers excited. Those rumors never came to fruition, but Star Wars may have something similar in store: a long-awaited reunion for two of The Force Unleashed's most beloved voice actors. The Force Unleashed's Sam Witwer & David W. Collins Are Reuniting In Maul - Shadow Lord Two of the main voice actors that played original characters in The Force Unleashed — Sam Witwer, who voiced Galen Marek, and David W. Collins, who voiced the sparring droid PROXY — have major roles in the upcoming series Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord. Witwer has long been the animated voice of Maul since he reappeared in The Clone Wars season 4, while Collins will be voicing a new character named Spybot in Maul - Shadow Lord. While we don't know anything about Spybot beyond his name at this point, there's a real chance he could have a similar relationship with Maul as PROXY did with Starkiller. In The Force Unleashed, PROXY was Starkiller's best friend who had been programmed to kill him. Given the fact that Maul - Shadow Lord will see Maul take control of the Crimson Dawn criminal syndicate, it's possible that Spybot could be a friend and assistant to Witwer's character, just as PROXY was to Starkiller. How The Force Unleashed Marked A Generation As previously mentioned, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed has become one of the most beloved parts of the entire franchise for many Star Wars fans. A big reason the game is so beloved is simply nostalgia for fans of a certain age — I still remember watching in awe as my friend's older brother played when I was 10 years old — but there's more to the games than nostalgia alone. The Force Unleashed is a Star Wars game unlike any other. It was more technologically advanced than Knights of the Old Republic, especially in terms of gameplay. That helped make all of Galen's insanely powerful Force feats stick in players' minds. The story of the games as well, of Darth Vader taking on an apprentice to overthrow Palpatine in the interim years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, has also stuck with players for nearly two decades. It's probably Galen Marek himself who is most responsible for The Force Unleashed's staying power, however. Sam Witwer's performance is brilliant and extremely memorable, but Galen himself is also a remarkable character. His arc, of abandoning the Sith in favor of dying for the Rebellion, perfectly fits with Star Wars' larger story of redemption. He also acts as an incredible foil to Darth Vader, and a perfect bit of context for Vader's plans for Luke in Return of the Jedi. Which Parts Of The Force Unleashed Should Be Re-Canonized With a reunion of The Force Unleashed coming in the form of Maul - Shadow Lord, coupled with Darth Talon's canon return, there are obvious questions about what Lucasfilm and Disney should consider bringing back into canon from the old Expanded Universe. There are plenty of elements of The Force Unleashed that could still work in canon. With Maul - Shadow Lord seemingly borrowing from the EU, there's never been a better time to re-canonize those elements. Related Maul: Shadow Lord Is A Sad Reminder Of This Star Wars Game Series' Early Grave Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord will once more display the talents of this actor, but it's unfortunate that their beloved game franchise is dead. Posts By Jared Stewart I personally think Darth Vader training an apprentice to overthrow Emperor Palpatine during the Dark Times of the Star Wars timeline could still work in canon. Galen's wildly overpowered Force abilities probably couldn't survive, but the core of his story and his relationship with Vader could add a lot of valuable context to the franchise and Vader's eventual redemption. While Star Wars: The Force Unleashed won't be making a full canon return, it still has a lot to offer to Star Wars canon. 5/10 Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Like Follow Followed Hack and Slash Systems OpenCritic Reviews Top Critic Avg: 64/100 Critics Rec: 29% Released September 16, 2008 ESRB T For Teen // Violence Developer LucasArts Publisher LucasArts Engine havok, euphoria Multiplayer Local Multiplayer Franchise Star Wars
