Star Wars explains why droids aren't slaves.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Dark Droids #1 While Star Wars fans never really gave it much thought initially, it has come to their attention that the way droids are used and treated is a bit too similar to slavery, if not slavery outright. It’s been established that droids are sentient, as they have the ability to feel emotion and create independent thoughts.

One of the first notable moments in Star Wars history where the ethics of owning sentient droids were called into question was in the film Solo: A Star Wars Story. The movie introduced a droid named L3-37, who was a major proponent of droid rights. This idea then seemingly carried over to the comics, where it was revealed that, long ago, a droid named Ajax Sigma actually led a droid revolution against the ancient Jedi.

Not All Droids Are Sentient Like Star Wars Fans Thought, Meaning They Can’t Be Slaves In Star Wars: Dark Droids #1 by Charles Soule, Luke Ross, and Alex Sinclair, the Scourge is on the loose in the galaxy, which has the power to infect droids and cyborgs it comes into contact with, adding them to its hive-mind. Its plan is to take over as many droids and cyborgs as it can until it has the strength and numbers to conquer the galaxy.

Ajax Sigma’s role in this Star Wars book is incredibly important, as it not only introduces the idea of a free droid colony, but it also lets fans know that not all droids - no matter how advanced they seem - are able to be ‘free’ the way humans view freedom. Ajax reveals most droids require direction, and need to perform tasks for organics, or else they simply allow themselves to die.

While the idea of slavery existing in Star Wars at all isn’t great - especially when it seems the protagonists are guilty of such a horrific practice - the explanation given in this issue is much better than the preconceived notion that every single droid shown in Star Wars was a slave who’d rather be free. Hopefully, Star Wars will continue to utilize Ajax Sigma to fight for droid rights and free those who have the capacity to seek freedom.
