Starfleet Academy is a symbol of the resurgent Federation, with Chancellor Ake overseeing the first class of cadets to study in San Francisco on Earth in 120 years. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 occasionally references the greater happenings in the Federation, from the importance of bringing the Betazoids back to the fold to finding the desperate Klingon Empire a new homeworld. The Federation's Balance Of Power May Start To Change In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 could mean the beginning of the end of Laira Rillak's Presidency. The hybrid human-Cardassian-Bajoran politician was the newly elected Federation President at the start of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, which also saw the reopening of Starfleet Academy. A Presidential election is a prime learning opportunity for Starfleet Academy's cadets, and it directly ties in since the Federation President is now based on Betazed, the homeworld of Ocam and Tarima Sadal . Why The Federation President Is More Important Than Ever In Star Trek's 32nd Century Federation Presidents have appeared in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but they were ancillary characters. Laira Rillak became the most prominent President of the Federation when she was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Star Trek: Enterprise writer-producer Michael Sussman has a proposed comeback vehicle for Scott Bakula titled Star Trek: United, which would be a 22nd century political thriller centering on Federation President Jonathan Archer and his family. President Rillak was a recurring character who personally oversaw Captain Michael Burnham's investigation of the Dark Matter Anomaly in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Rillak was a harsh critic of Burnham's methods as the new Captain of the USS Discovery. Rillak was an unwelcome presence aboard the USS Discovery at first. Burnham and the President eventually earned each other's respect as Discovery journeyed to another galaxy to make First Contact with the DMA's creators, Species 10-C. President Rillk had more faith in Burnham's abilities to find the Progenitors' ancient technology in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Nus Braka nearly toppling the Federation in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's finale showed just how vulnerable the alliance of worlds still is, especially to its myriad enemies who don't want the Federation to expand. President Laira Rillak oversaw the Federation's triumphs and was saved from disaster by Starfleet's USS Discovery and USS Athena. Yet Rillak's Presidency is far from secure, and a charismatic political opponent could emerge and challenge for the highest office in the Federation in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2. For better or worse, the balance of power in the Federation could be altered if President Laira Rillak is unable to win a second term.
