Stanford has won all 71 times that the Cardinal and Cougars have faced off, in a streak that predates head coach Tara VanDerveer
STANFORD — There’s not much about the Stanford women’s basketball program that predates head coach Tara VanDerveer.Stanford and Washington State have played 71 times. Stanford has won every time. The series stands at 71-0. Or 0-71.
Ask VanDerveer about the streak, and she says “doesn’t even think about it, and I don’t want to talk about it.” As a result, her team is largely unaware of what’s on the line Friday night when the Cardinal, ranked No. 3 in the nation, face Washington State in Pullman. The first time Stanford and Washington State met, the schools were playing in separate conferences, before the Pac-10 officially had women’s sports. The Cardinal, coached by Dottie McCrea, hosted the Cougars on Feb. 1, 1983. Stanford won 78-64.
