Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Netflix's Squid Game, addresses the casting of cisgender actor Park Sung-hoon as the transgender character Hyun-ju in season 2.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game , is addressing the casting of cisgender actor Park Sung-hoon as the transgender character Hyun-ju in season 2. Hwang, 53, who also wrote and directed both seasons, acknowledged that some fans anticipated a transgender woman would portray Hyun-ju, a former special forces officer participating in the deadly competition to win money for gender-affirming surgery.

Hwang stated he originally planned for authentic casting with a transgender actor but encountered a scarcity of openly transgender actors in South Korea. He lamented the social marginalization of the LGBTQ community in the country. After concluding that finding an authentic transgender woman for the role was nearly impossible, the Squid Game team selected Park, 39. Hwang expressed confidence in Park's talent and ability to portray the character effectively. Hwang's inclusion of a transgender character aligns with the series' first season's message, which premiered on Netflix in 2021. Hwang sees the participants in Squid Game as individuals often marginalized or neglected by society, including gender minorities. He created Hyun-ju as a male-to-female transgender woman to reflect the societal challenges faced by this group in Korea
