by Avery Sloane & Jared Turner, KUTVWarmer weather means spring cleaning. While you’re focused on the clutter, there may be bigger problems hiding out of sight. From hidden mold to costly water damage, experts say now is the time to tackle those less obvious home hazards.
ARC Salt Lake talked to Hannah Wagner from ServiceMaster Restore about what to look for and how to solve those biggest cleaning challenges. An expert in home restoration, Wagner gave practical tips on how to spot early warning signs before small issues turn into expensive repairs.$100 million effort underway to save Wasatch Front pipeline in event of big earthquakeWagner said the area under the cabinets where water flows near the sink and dishwasher can hide some of the biggest damage. “We spend so much of our time in the kitchen. It also has the highest concentration of water lines,” she said. “I don’t think we’re really looking under there for signs of leaking.” She suggested pulling the trash out and all the other cleaning supplies and examining the area for signs of water where it shouldn’t be.Even a small, slow leak can lead to warped wood, damaged cabinets, and mold growth if left unchecked. “Water is patient, but mold is fast,” she said. “The longer you let that sit, the bigger the issue is going to be.”A clean, well-performing refrigerator needs space for air to move freely. Keeping the gaps where that air moves clear can keep your kitchen clean and the fridge running smoothly. “Check in front of your fridge and clear all that dust where the exhaust is, because as dust builds up, the drains stop working, it’s a fire hazard, and it’s all around just gross,” Wagner said. “I always suggest talking your fridge and pulling it out. Fridges have wheels – they move,” she said. “Pull them out and look behind it – and check for swelling along the bottom of the fridge.”She also said you should open the fridge and check the very bottom for water. “If water is pooling, you have a drain issue. There’s a clog somewhere. Take it out, clean it, call a professional to come out and take a look,” Wagner said.Unknown leaks can present themselves above you on the ceiling – especially under bathrooms or other plumbing areas. “If you have a sink, if you have a bathroom above you, there’s a chance something has leaked,” Wagner said. “Look for those yellow, those brown stains. If you see a stain that’s the size of a lemon, there’s at least a gallon of water up there.”‘Don’t start ripping stuff out yet’ Wagner said it can be tempting to jump in and fix the problem yourself, but that can sometimes make things worse. “We have a lot of people that just immediately start to tear stuff out. Give a professional a call,” Wagner said. Those DIY projects can turn something covered by insurance into something where’s you’re footing the bill yourself, especially if something goes wrong. “When you have mold, it’s indicative of a long-term leak, and those just are not covered by insurance,” she said.Parker Kingston, a former wide receiver at Brigham Young University, was scheduled to make an appearance in a St. George court today on a felony rape charge.DuA 75-year-old woman was killed and three others were taken to the hospital after a rear-end crash on State Road 201 near Magna on Sunday. The crash happened aroJerrod Calhoun has left Utah State to become the next head coach at Cincinnati.According to CBS Sports, the deal that would bring Calhoun to Cincinnati has beenA bomb threat was reported at the Flying J in Willard, according to the Willard Police Department.Willard police, the Willard Fire Department, Utah Highway PatrA man in his 40s died after Sandy police fired multiple shots during a domestic-related incident, the Sandy Police Department said.According to the department,
