The Bay Area experienced record-breaking heat to kick off the spring season. Temperatures were significantly higher than average, but a slight cooling trend is expected for the weekend. Despite the relief, temperatures will still remain above seasonal averages.

Temperature s are expected to remain 5-10 degrees higher than their seasonal averages for the start of spring and are likely to remain that way into next week, according to the weather service.

Spring arrived in the Bay Area with a sizzling-hot Friday, but cooler temperatures may help residents appreciate the new season a little more as the weekend begins. “We’re gonna see some relief Saturday,” National Weather Service meteorologist Dial Hoang said. “Then there’s going to be a little bit more relief on Sunday.”Home insurance prices, especially in California, to keep rising with severe weather That doesn’t mean it will be as cool as normal. Temperatures are expected to remain 5-10 degrees higher than their seasonal averages for the start of spring and are likely to remain that way into next week, according to the weather service.Perhaps just as telling a statistic for how hot it was from Monday into Friday evening was the temperature at 5,000 feet. Weather balloons launched by the weather service daily revealed that temperature early Friday to be 74 degrees over the region, the agency said. The 5,000-foot temperatures help meteorologists gauge how hot a heat wave may become. That reading broke not only the all-time March record for the region — set earlier this week — but the all-time April mark, as well, according to the weather service. “It’s just one more way to put the sheer scale of this heat wave into context beyond just surface climates,” the weather service wrote on its social media sites.Redwood City and Salinas hit 94 degrees, eclipsing the previous record of 93 set earlier this week in both cities.Livermore and Oakland reached 91 degrees, upending Livermore’s previous record of 90 set last year and Oakland’s previous record of 89 set earlier this week. Finally, San Francisco International Airport topped out at 89 degrees. Its previous record of 85 was set in 1953.The end to such extreme heat will come courtesy of an upper-level low-pressure trough that has slightly altered the air flow and pushed a thick ridge of high pressure far enough east that new cooler air can make its way to the region. That natural cooling will gain influence through the beginning of next week, he said. Beginning Sunday, high temperatures are expected to hit the low 80s in the hottest spots of the Santa Clara Valley and far inland East Bay while remaining in the mid-to-high 70s in other areas away from the Bay. Closer to the water, in the Peninsula and San Francisco, the thermometer might not make it out of the high 60s.Pacific Crest Trail tradition is now out of bounds for hikersOakland father used son’s phone to track down the child’s suspected rapist, police sayOakland police dig up backyard in latest effort to find Daphne Webb, missing for 13 yearsHeritage Bank chops more than 100 Bay Area jobs in wake of mergerPerson stabbed in downtown Oakland; suspect arrested
