Tom Holland's Spider-Man is at a crossroads. After the events of No Way Home, the future for his character is uncertain. Spider-Man 4 is on the horizon, but its proximity to major Avengers events like Doomsday and Secret Wars raises questions about its narrative direction. Will Spider-Man 4 delve into the larger multiverse crisis, or will it focus on Peter Parker's personal journey and new opportunities for growth?

The last time we saw Tom Holland 's Peter Parker , he was teaming up with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire against a sinister reunion of their previous foes in Spider-Man: No Way Home. His fourth movie in the current arc (untitled for now, but let's call it Spider-Man 4 ) is in development and will arrive next year. Destin Daniel Cretton , director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will helm the project, which is set to begin filming in Summer 2025.

We don't know much else at this point. Holland's co-stars, including who he'll face from the rogue's gallery, are unannounced, as are the plot details. This is a crucial moment for the franchise. The choices made for Spider-Man 4 will make or break what has become the longest live-action Spidey stint thus far. 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Changed Everything for Tom Holland's Peter Parker While the MCU skipped most of Peter Parker's backstory (no radioactive spider bite, no death of Uncle Ben, etc.), the whole thing has served as a pseudo-origin story, spread out across a trilogy and multiple side quests. His first appearance in Captain America: Civil War subtly implied that Uncle Ben's death was weighing on him and informing his decision to be Spider-Man, and his extended journey ultimately led to Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) delivering the iconic 'with great power comes great responsibility' adage just before her death. To save the day (the multiverse, really), Peter chose to have countless memories wiped. To stave off impending doom, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) made it so that no one will remember that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). All their time, side by side... lost. At the end of No Way Home, it's as though he's finally, officially Spider-Man, equipped with a homemade suit, a secret identity, and a newfound drive to protect his city. The question is: will Spider-Man 4 follow that lead, or will he once again be sucked into a massive team-up venture? Will the MCU really commit to this bold premise that Tom Holland's Peter Parker is essentially starting from scratch? Tom Holland's Spider-Man Needs Time To Explore New Love Interests With Zendaya's MJ now completely unaware of Peter Parker's existence, he ends No Way Home by deciding to leave her alone. She's been able to enroll in college, she has a steady job again, and, most importantly, she's safe. By not being associated with Spider-Man, she's no longer in danger. It's a tough pill to swallow. Many of us love them together as a couple, but it's a decision Peter didn't make lightly. The MCU needs to allow him to live with that decision, not only for the duration of Spider-Man 4, but for the foreseeable future, too. Peter has had several love interests throughout Marvel Comics — most famously Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy — but it doesn't end there. The MCU should allow Peter to explore elsewhere, perhaps finally bringing Felicia Hardy / Black Cat into live action. Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 briefly introduced Felicia (portrayed by Felicity Jones), but that storyline was promptly dropped, and we never saw her take up the Black Cat mantle. Now, to be sure, we'd love for Peter and MJ to reunite one day. However, the impact would be immeasurably greater if Peter had the time to truly miss her and develop as the Spider-Man he's meant to be. 'Spider-Man 4's Story Might Be Drastically Impacted by 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Secret Wars' One of the key factors that will influence how Spider-Man 4 plays out is its proximity to Avengers: Doomsday. Consequentially, that's also a key contributing factor to confusion and apprehension. Doomsday, the fifth film under the MCU's flagship moniker and the first since Avengers: Endgame, will be released on May 1, 2026. Spider-Man 4 arrives only two months later on July 24, 2026. Although plot details are under wraps, fans of Marvel Comics know all too well what the introduction of Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) could mean, not to mention the incoming multiversal calamity implied by the subtitle for its follow-up: Avengers: Secret Wars. The comic storylines from which these next two Avengers movies draw involve massive incursions and clashes between virtually the entire Marvel roster. It's difficult to envision how Spider-Man 4 could stick to a street-level, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man of New York City narrative without completely ignoring Avengers: Doomsday. That is unless Peter Parker isn't involved with (and somehow remains unaware of) the events of Doomsday. RelatedThere's an even worse option. Spider-Man 4, despite premiering between Doomsday and Secret Wars, could be chronologically set outside the release order. Arguably, this was an unfair hindrance to Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp, each released between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
