A federal judge found a Bahamian alien smuggler guilty of attempting to smuggle a dozen illegal immigrants through the Miami coast. According to court documents, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers spotted Shakerio Michael Jones' speeding boat on December 19, 2024.
The boat was traveling from the direction of the Bahamas towards the U.S. When the 31-year-old's boat passed into U.S. waters off the coast of Miami-Dade County, CBP says they closed in.The officers reportedly ushered all 13 passengers, including Jones, onto the CBP vessel, where it was confirmed that the individuals did not have permission to enter the U.S. It was determined that the illegal immigrants came from a broad range of countries, including the United Kingdom, Haiti, Honduras, Ireland, India, and the Bahamas. On April 24, court documents show Jones entered a guilty plea, which was formally accepted by the judge on Wednesday. Jones' sentencing is scheduled for July 18, where he could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
