Two people arrested over theft of José Capelo portraits in Madrid in 2015 – one of which is still missing
, valued at €5m , which was one of five works by the famously thirsty and hell-raising artist that were stolen from the home of the painting’s subject almost a decade ago.
Three of the paintings were found in 2017, and the Policía Nacional announced on Thursday that a fourth – Bacon’s 1989 Study for Portrait of José Capelo – had been recovered. “As a result of those arrests and other police actions, one of the missing paintings was found at a property in Madrid.”The Policía Nacional said 16 people had been arrested in connection with the theft, including those allegedly responsible for the burglary nine years ago. It also said it was focusing its inquiries on Spanish citizens with links to eastern European criminal groups.
