Heavy rains and potential for debris flows and flooding expected in Southern California this weekend. Flood watch issued for areas affected by recent wildfires. Residents urged to take precautions.

Southern California is bracing for its worst rainstorm of the season this weekend, with a flood watch issued for areas scarred by recent wildfires. The storm is expected to bring significant rainfall and snow, particularly from Sunday night through Monday. Forecasters warn of a high risk of debris flows and flash flooding, especially in the burn areas of the Palisades, Franklin, Eaton, Hughes, and Bridge fires.

The storm is expected to be a slow-moving system, bringing waves of moisture through Monday. Mountains in Los Angeles and Ventura counties could receive 2 to 3 inches of rain, while other areas might see half an inch to 1 inch. Coastal northern San Diego County, Orange County, Ontario, Riverside, Lake Elsinore, and Temecula could experience 1 to 1.5 inches of rain, while San Diego could receive 0.7 to 1 inch and San Bernardino 1.5 to 2 inches. The storm's path and speed are still uncertain, but if it veers westward, it will pick up more moisture and result in heavier rainfall. On the other hand, a more eastward trajectory could lead to less rain. Forecasters urge residents in vulnerable areas to avoid recently burned areas, use sandbags to protect property, and stock up on supplies in case of road closures. This rain comes after a record-breaking dry spell for Southern California, with most areas receiving less than 5% of their average rainfall for this time of year. The U.S. Drought Monitor currently classifies Southern California as either in 'extreme drought' or 'severe drought'
