South Texas has not seen temps climb very far above 100 degrees this year. That changes this week as high pressure moves directly overhead.
It’s been another hot summer, as San Antonio has hit the 100-degree mark 22 times so far in 2024. However, high temps have rarely gone very far above the century mark. In fact, only once have highs reached 103 degrees, which happened back on June 4. That’s because most high pressure systems this summer have been centered significantly west of South Texas . However, that will change this week as high pressure will shift east, directly over Central and South Texas .
High pressure directly overhead will create a “heat dome” effect. That’s because as sinking air in the atmosphere compresses and heats up near the ground, the high pressure above will prevent the air from rising, as if it were in a dome. High temperatures are expected to top out at 106 to 107 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, the hottest temperatures so far in 2024. San Antonio will be close to the record high of 107 degrees Tuesday afternoon.
