South Salt Lake City Council member Paul Sanchez said Friday he intends to file lawsuits against city figures over his arrest for trespassing at city hall.
The South Salt Lake City Council on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, unanimously voted to censure member Paul Sanchez over code of conduct violations in response to multiple social media posts critical of the city and its elected and appointed leaders. He was met by three South Salt Lake officers who prevented him from attending a council meeting in person, per terms ofHe rolled video of the encounter with police and told 2News he intended to be taken into custody.Criminal defense lawyer Steve Burton found the actions “surprising.”“If I was in his situation, I would definitely raise the fact that they are abridging his First Amendment rights to free speech,” Burton said.
Sanchez, who has only been in office for months, said he never threatened anyone, but has highlighted “corruption” in South Salt Lake government. 2News contacted the city attorney’s office which referred questions to a South Salt Lake spokesperson.Might the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office review the arrest and circumstances related to it?
DA Sim Gill said the office “is not involved in this matter at this time; if the results of an investigation are presented to our office, we will look into it.”
