) - As election season intensifies, Vice President of the South Alabama Better Business Bureau, Monde Donaldson says fraudulent political schemes are becoming more common.
The number one type of scam involves voter registration. Donaldson says oftentimes, in this case, scammers will call, text or approach people in person. “We have had people call in saying, ‘hey I have my name to somebody at a fair or a community event … they were asking for things like my credit card number and things like that,” Donaldson shares.
It’s important to remember that you can ONLY register to vote online, by mail or in person at a local election office. Donaldson advises hanging up immediately if you receive this type of call, avoid clinking links in fake texts and avoid giving out personal information over the phone or to a stranger.“I you all of a sudden get a call saying this is Donald Trump or this is Kamala Harris, you know the chances those people are actually calling you are very slim,” said Donaldson.
