South Africans had many questions about social grants in 2022, Google's Year in Search data released on Wednesday showed.

The top-searched trending term was"SRS Status Check", as people tried to figure out if they would be receiving the R350 payment instituted as a relief measure during the pandemic.

Other serious matters – such as drought and disease – were also on South African minds, Google's numbers show. In the number four trending spot of concepts people wanted explanations for was"What is the relationship between climate change and the regularity of droughts" – with global warming in position number two for"what is" type questions, and drought in position seven.

The war in Europe showed up via"Ukraine" and"Russia" as the fifth and tenth top trending terms respectively, and"what is NATO" as the third most what-is term.
