The indie movie genre has seen another major box office milestone surpassed in the form of Sound of Freedom. Inspired by the story of real former government agent Tim Ballard, the movie explores his efforts to rescue children from a sex trafficking ring in Colombia and his founding of the non-profit organization Operation Underground Railroad.

Sound of Freedom Continues A Unique Successful Streak In addition to being the first indie movie to cross the $100 million mark domestically since the pandemic, Sound of Freedom's new box office milestone also puts it as the 16th-highest-grossing movie of the year, sitting just behind Scream 6's $108 million and The Flash's $107 million ahead of it.
With such blockbuster productions as The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny proving to be flops, it will be interesting to see how Sound of Freedom's box office milestone influences Hollywood's choices in movies in the near future. The horror genre has frequently shown smaller budgeted efforts can be more profitable than tentpole franchises, with this year alone seeing Scream 6 and Insidious: The Red Door keeping the genre alive and well.
