Sonny Smart, the father of University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart, passed away on Saturday following complications from hip surgery after a fall in New Orleans on New Year's Eve. Sonny had traveled to Louisiana to watch his son's team compete in the College Football Playoffs. He was remembered as a highly respected high school coach and a loving family man.
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Sonny Smart , father of the University of Georgia’s head football coach Kirby Smart , died on Saturday.
“He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries,” the school said. “The Smart family treasures everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength and guidance.” “He was a class act,” said Dothan’s Harry Wayne Parrish, who coached against Sonny Smart. “He was such so well-prepared that he made our team better.”“An incredible father and husband and a great coach in his own right, he was a constant presence at Georgia football games along with his wife Sharon,” he said. “Sonny embodied the values and strength that we should all wish to have.”
Sonny Smart grew up in Columbia, Alabama, where his father operated a store. Sonny went on to became a highly respected high school coach.
