Sonny Smart, the father of the University of Georgia's (UGA) head football coach Kirby Smart, died on Saturday.In a statement, UGA said Sonny underwent hip surgery after falling in New Orleans on New Year's Eve.
NEW ORLEANS, LA -Sonny Smart, the father of the University of Georgia’s head football coach Kirby Smart, died on Saturday.
“He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries,” the school said. “The Smart family treasures everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength and guidance.” “He was a class act,” said Dothan’s Harry Wayne Parrish, who coached against Sonny Smart after taking a head coaching job in Blakely following retiring in Alabama.Like Coach Parrish, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he was heartbroken to learn of Sonny’s death.
