Sonido Gallo Negro, a Mexican-Argentine septet, delivered a captivating performance at Alex's Bar in Long Beach, showcasing their unique blend of cumbia and psychedelic influences.
If your New Year's Eve idea was to have a really good time, dancing to rhythms of undeniable Latin American roots, but framed in original creations that don't necessarily circulate on the radio, the best thing you could have done in this part of Southern California was to attend the Sonido Gallo Negro concert held at Alex's Bar in Long Beach.
Although the base of this lively septet is cumbia, what its members have done over their extensive discography, consisting of five studio albums and one live album, is a much less 'mainstream' facet of the genre that dispenses almost entirely with lyrics and that, anyway, can sound familiar to those who have managed to access the already long-standing - but recently revalued - psychedelic proposal that emerged in the Peruvian Amazon during the 1970s. Of course, Sonido Gallo Negro, formed 14 years ago in Mexico City, does things its own way, incorporating elements of different genres and maintaining a particular edge that owes much to what some of its members, coming from surf bands like Espectroplasma, Twin Tones and Telekrimen, used to do, and who currently offer a powerful sound where the electric guitar, flute, electronic organ, synthesizer, theremin and various percussion instruments intervene. The increasingly frequent visits of the combo, which is made up of five Mexicans and two Argentines, go hand in hand with what is happening with Son Rompe Pera, the quintet from Naucalpan that follows the same instrumental line of the marimba and that, despite having formed less time ago, has achieved unexpected recognition on our shores, to the point that this year alone, in addition to having performed at the same Alex's Bar, participated in the two consecutive weekends of the Coachella Festival
