Mexican band Son Rompe Pera, known for their unique blend of cumbia and punk, continues to captivate audiences in Southern California with their energetic and original performances.
This band isn't exactly unknown in these parts. Although it originated in the Mexican capital (more precisely, in the municipality of Naucalpan) and its center of operations remains in Mexico, Son Rompe Pera has achieved a level of recognition in recent years that has led them to perform on stages around the world.
Southern California has been fully included in the itinerary, to the point that the presentation the group will offer this Saturday at El Rey in West Hollywood is at least the third they have made in this area of the world in a year that has only served to increase the stir they are causing with their original and vibrant proposal. This performance at El Rey continues what happened last September 21st at the Ford in Hollywood, where they were the central act of “Noche de cumbia”, a Cumbiatón LA event that also featured Reyna Tropical and Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto; and, of course, what happened in April, when the group made its debut at the renowned Coachella Festival, performing for two consecutive weekends. As revealed by a Los Angeles Times article published in 2022, Son Rompe Pera's connection with their local followers has been positive from the beginning. “We've done very well with the audience response; there's all kinds of people, from families who bring their children to parents, punks and people who like rock,” said Jesús “Kacho” Gama, one of the main members of the band, at the time. “We are breaking the paradigm that the marimba is more folkloric, more classic, more standard.” As is known, the group practices a style of cumbia influenced by the marimba music originating from Chiapas, but they temper it with elements of punk and ska that, when not evident in the interpretation of the instruments, are shown in the physical aspect of their concerts, which has opened unexpected doors for them
