Published: Dec. 18, 2024, 3:33 p.m. Solon Mayor Ed Kraus highlights some of the city’s accomplishments of 2024 during City Council ’s final meeting of the year Monday (Dec. 16). SOLON , Ohio -- Mayor Ed Kraus can take much pride in what the city was able to accomplish in his seventh year as mayor. At City Council ’s final meeting of the year Monday (Dec. 16), Kraus spoke about some projects that were launched in the city this year or last year that will carry over into next year.
He saved the one he called “the greatest thing” for last -- the improvements that are being done at Solon Community Park. Construction began in June with Phase 1, which includes a new playground, upgrades to Cisar Field and site improvements at the park.Phase 2 will begin next year after council approved about $12 million in funding for it Dec. 2. This phase will include an entry pavilion with restrooms, a stage, a concession stand, new pickleball courts, a maintenance building, a renovated parking lot and additional park pavilions. Some of these enhancements in Phase 2 will be funded by $1.5 million allocated from this year’s capital budget process in the Ohio Legislature -- credited to the efforts of State Sen. Jerry Cirino (R-Kirtland), who represents Solon in Ohio Senate District 18. “Thanks to Sen. Cirino for the $1.5 million for the park,” Kraus said. “What a great opportunity to reinvest in our beautiful park.” Kraus is also very excited about The District in Solon, a mixed-use development plan for 9.5 acres of land on Aurora Road, including the former Liberty Ford site. Council approved several agreements related to this project in October, and construction is expected to start next year. The former Liberty Ford building, which had been vacant since 2018, was demolished in October.“Liberty Ford -- what a transformational development we’re going to have on that old, abandoned site,” Kraus said
