SOLON , Ohio – City Council heard some support for a rezoning request that would permit a Michael Angelo’s Winery and Bakery and luxury townhomes on Aurora Road at a second public hearing.
At the first public hearing Nov. 18, all 14 residents who spoke to council expressed either concerns or opposition to the rezoning request. One of the parcels is a vacant home that was built in 1837 by Samuel Bull, one of the city’s first settlers, according to the Solon Historical Society.‘It would be an asset to Solon’
Immonen said she knows many residents who have expressed opposition to the proposal are concerned about increased traffic on Aurora Road. Public Works Commissioner William Drsek confirmed that both a traffic study and a sanitary sewer study would be required.Solon resident Teresa Lichtcsien tells City Council Monday that the city would benefit from having a Michael Angelo’s Winery and Bakery on Aurora Road.Teresa Lichtcsien, a city resident for more than 30 years, also supports the proposal.
“But it’s really not a bar as much as it is a restaurant and a place to hold events and for people to gather for a lot of different reasons,” she said. “And that’s something that you just don’t have in our city. “According to the city’s master plan, only parcels located within the central retail district are eligible under this chapter. The ordinance currently states not eligible. So what are you going to change the ordinance to?”“I’m sure Michael Angelo’s is really a nice place,” he said. “But Richfield has 3,900 residents; we have 24,000.
The request to develop 88 homes on a 100-acre property off of Bainbridge Road was defeated by a 70 percent to 30 percent vote. It would have rezoned this property in Ward 3 from single-family residential to a mixed-use planning district. “The message from the community is don’t put stuff in our back yards that you wouldn’t appreciate in yours.”
