Shaker Heights began a pilot program two years ago in which licensed professional mental healthcare workers accompanied police and firefighters/EMS to calls involving mental health issues. In early summer, the program, no longer a pilot, will expand to include Cleveland Heights, University Heights, South Euclid and Richmond Heights.
Social workers will accompany first responders to calls involving mental health issues in Shaker Hts., Cleveland Hts., University Hts., South Euclid, Richmond Hts.Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne, mayors from five local cities, and safety officials met Tuesday in Shaker Heights to announce the expansion of what had been a Shaker pilot program, that sends a social worker with first responders to calls involving mental health issues.
Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne and the mayors of the five eastern suburbs held a press conference Tuesday at Shaker Heights Fire Station No. 1 to announce the program’s expansion. The program, no longer a pilot, is named First CALL and is meant to improve the response to those suffering with mental health needs.
