SSA commissioner Martin O’Malley testified before the Senate Special Committee on Aging several months after being confirmed as the commissioner.
He took over a Social Security Administration that had lost staff at high rates and was offering worse customer service in the form of long wait times, issues with the proper payments being delivered and huge backlogs of claims. Social Security, which is broadly popular among taxpayers, faces multiple issues moving forward. Its primary issue is a fiscal cliff that will come in 2034 without congressional intervention and lead to only about 77% of benefits being able to be paid out. “The services provided by the Social Security Administration touch the lives of every single American, Social Security is the most successful anti-poverty program to date,” said Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and committee chairman. “We should be protecting and strengthening Social Security for those receiving benefits today and for future generations.” The upcoming budget pitfall has been widely known for years amid growing numbers of beneficiaries and lower income through taxes that finance the program
