The SNP has lost nearly a third of its membership in the last year, figures published today have revealed

The SNP disclosed the number of members - who will effectively decide on the next First minister - was 72,186. It comes after Kate Forbes and Ash Regan called for an independent auditor to oversee the election, citing a need for transparency. A spokeswoman said party membership numbers fluctuated month by month and day by day depending on a range of circumstances, which was why the party only published an end of year number within its annual accounts.
