'I believe that the majority in Scotland want to offer a place of welcome to those seeking asylum', NicolaSturgeon ✍

It proposes to make asylum claims from those who travel to the United Kingdom on small boats inadmissible.

It is appalling – though sadly not surprising – that the Tory government at Westminster has introduced legislation of this nature, especially as they know it is unlikely to comply with the Human Rights Act and will just add to the damage already inflicted on the UK’s reputation as a place of refuge, and further undermine its credibility with international partners.

All of these steps forward are important, and make a real difference to women and families in Scotland. However, there is much more to do – gender equality is still very much an unwon cause. The proposals are based on recommendations made by the Working Group on Misogyny led by Baroness Helena Kennedy. The Group concluded that the harmful effects of misogyny are not adequately dealt with by current laws and that reform is needed to give women and girls protection against behaviour that leaves too many living in fear and limits our potential.
