Multiple winter weather alerts are in effect from Southwest to Southeast Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A well-advertised winter storm is bringing snow back to parts of Mainland Alaska, with the biggest impacts today occurring in Southwest Alaska . Expect snow to spread east into Southcentral overnight into Friday, with snow and rain expected for Southeast by week’s end. This storm will bring a brief, but slow warming trend, with highs climbing back near freezing for the southern mainland.

Snow and blowing snow is to be expected, with total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches. Winds will gusts as high as 45 mph, with visibility reduced to one half mile at times. Heavy snow looks likely, with 3 to 6 inches along the Haines Highway. Higher amounts will fall on the Chilkat Peninsula and upper portions of the Klondike Highway, where 8 to 15 inches of snow looks possible. Additionally, winds up to 40 mph will lead to areas of blowing snow and difficult travel conditions.

South winds 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph will be expected. Any gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and could lead to a few power outages. Additionally, visibility through the passes of the Alaska Range could be reduced due to blowing snow. Snow and blowing snow is to be expected, with visibility reduced to one half mile or less at times. This comes as winds will gusts upwards of 50 mph, with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected.will go into effect at 10am this morning through 4am Friday for the Lower Kuskokwim Valley.
