A Polar vortex of cold air over the North Pole has the potential to spark a major freeze across Scotland this month
Snow is on its way to Scotland - meaning the Beast from the East may be coming back with a vengeance. A collapsing Polar vortex could spark a major freeze this month, similar to the epic storm from February 2018, according to some forecasters.
Meteorologists are reported to be keeping a close eye on a pool of cold air spinning over the North Pole which has the potential to trigger a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event, also known as an SSW. It was just such a weather incident that drove the Arctic deluge five years ago with the UK covered in deep snow and struck with deadly blizzards.
The cold snap earlier in December could become a distant memory as, in addition to above-average snowfall, the wintry weather could pave the way for another big freeze. "If an SSW does set in icy weather could hit Brits around the middle of January," Mr Madden warned. Dan Stroud, Met Office meteorologist, said of the bank holiday weather: "We're expecting temperatures to drop quite quickly, quite widely - actually below zero - with some rural spots getting down to minus 7C, minus 8C tonight in the Highlands."
