Violent online videos show brutal beatings

A sickening trend of violent online videos have swept through Scotland as attacks on kids are being shared for 'likes and popularity'.

"Whether it is harmful, dangerous or violent, I don't think, for some of, it matters. I think what matters to them is the notoriety that comes with it. To them, it is entertainment and content to share. They're probably not thinking that deeply about it or the consequences that will follow." In October last year, a disturbing clip shared on Twitter shows a young boy being chased through carriages on a ScotRail train in the East End of Glasgow. The nasty attack shows the victim falling to the ground with an attacker jumping on his head. And only last week, the Daily Record told how a pupil from Lochaber High School in Fort William required brain scans after a beating that left her feeling dizzy and sick.

"She asked me once if the video would make other people want to attack her because she didn't defend herself. I had to reassure her that people did not like what they were watching. The mum-of-four has blasted the online trend as 'horrific' and called for better regulations on online platforms. Fearless, which is the youth service of Crimestoppers, warns the viral clips are posing a real danger to teenagers - who may become desensitised to the violence. The charity fears that with each video receiving thousands of views and shares, it may only encourage youths to continue to upload to the sites.

"Repeated exposure to this level of violence also concerns me for what youths believe to be normal and acceptable. If unchecked, bullying can bleed into violence and that is why prevention and education is needed to stop intimidating behaviours to develop into something more serious."
