Change is here for millions of Americans as federal food assistance undergoes a major overhaul.
Access to the program, however, may now be in jeopardy as lawmakers crack down on spending and fraud through tightened work requirements. Under old rules, SNAP recipients between the ages of 15 and 59 who are able to work were required to register for employment, take a suitable job, or participate in a state's SNAP Employment and Training Program.
They were also not allowed to voluntarily quit or work fewer than 30 hours per week.Change also came for those with dependents, who were once exempt from work requirements if their youngest was under 18. Under the new rules, a person's youngest dependent must now be 13 or younger for parents and guardians to receive an exemption. Work exemptions were also tightened for veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and former foster youth aged 24 or younger. They must now qualify for an exemption in a different way or be subject to work requirements.Regional advocacy groups, such as United Way of King County and Food Lifeline, said these changes could kick thousands off the program. The nonprofits said they worry a loss of benefits could spike food insecurity across the region, putting a strain on other areas of the safety net. Local food banks are bracing for increased need.
