The SMU program had the upper hand when its riders outscored Auburn in reining and horsemanship . After tying 2-2 in the flat arena, Auburn came away with a 3-2 advantage in fences. The early lead was pivotal for SMU to come away with the victory. SMU’s run toward the national title started in the NCEA quarterfinals Thursday, where the team defeated Baylor 10-8. A 14-6 win over TCU on Friday set up a rematch between SMU and Auburn, two of the nation’s top equestrian teams.
