These can be identified either as by the presence of a paramagnetic rim, which is a rim of the iron-laden macrophages around the lesion, or on a kind of imaging called susceptibility-weighted imaging, which can be sensitive to the presence of iron, or as slowly expanding lesions, which are lesions that are gradually increasing in size over time.
