Dr Bishal Gyawali discusses a new series on interpreting clinical research.
Hello, everyone. This is Dr Bishal Gyawali from Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. I'm an associate professor in oncology and public health sciences, and today I'm very happy to introduce a new series with Medscape Oncology calledAs you all know, the importance of critical appraisal of literature is increasing more and more, and we have been discussing how we are not properly trained in our fellowships and post-fellowships on how to read clinical trials properly.
I'm sorry to tell you that's not usually the case. In fact, several studies, including some of my own, have shown the presence of important biases in these important abstract presentations or journal reports. How do we tease that apart and how can we rely on the conclusions? I'm happy to announce this new video series, in collaboration with Medscape, where we'll go through all the fundamental principles of interpreting clinical research well. The first half of this series will focus on basic principles. We'll start with the types of clinical research, the types of clinical trials, and we'll focus mainly on phase 3 clinical trials first.
Then we'll move on to the results, and we'll see how the results have been reported. Have they been reported properly, and what inferences can we make from those results? Based on that, I don't think we need to read the conclusions anymore because we can draw our own conclusions after having all these skills.
