With Send Help and Iron Lung kicking off 2026's box office with a bang, it's clear the horror genre has never been stronger, and one movie from last year may be responsible. While 2025 was full of excellent films, one 10/10 masterpiece stood out among the rest and stole all the headlines — Sinners.
Having teamed up several times before, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan reunited for their most ambitious project yet, which was a risk that paid off. Despite being best known for action and drama-oriented movies like Black Panther, Fruitvale Station, and the Creed series, the duo opted to dive into horror through their record-breaking vampire flick. Alongside being a suspenseful thriller with plenty of action, Sinners used its vampires as a cultural metaphor, allowing the movie to explore several historical themes. The deeply layered movie isn't just entertaining, it's an important contribution to cinema that will be relevant for years to come, which its most recent success has made abundantly clear. Sinners Was The Biggest Surprise Of 2025 & Deserves All Its Praise Heading into 2025, Sinners did have a decent amount of buzz behind it given Coogler and Jordan's previous work, but no one expected it to be anywhere near as successful as it actually was. In a year that saw the DCU launch its cinematic universe, Marvel produce three movies, the return of Jurassic World, and so many other huge IPs hitting the big screen, it would be fair to assume Sinners may come and go pretty quickly. However, this was far from the case, becoming arguably the biggest hit of the year instead. Boasting a 97% critic score and a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Sinners' reviews across the board were extremely positive, and it also secured a healthy box office total, earning over $368 million from a reported $90 million budget. With individual performances also being praised alongside things like the music and costume design, the final product couldn't have been any better. It's rare that original films like this make such a big impact, but people absolutely loved Sinners, and for good reason. It overcame the odds to become one of the best movies of 2025, if not the best, and it excelled in pretty much all categories, hence its award recognition. The atmosphere was incredible, the cinematography shone, and with Sinners going on to achieve so many accolades, it's impossible to deny that Coogler and Jordan struck gold with this captivating thriller. Sinners’ Streaming Success Follows Up On Its Box Office Triumphs As if Sinners' box office triumphs weren't impressive enough, the movie has followed it up with some major streaming success, continuing the movie's strong legacy. Investing nearly $100 million in an original movie like this seemed like a huge gamble from Warner Bros, yet Sinners set box office records and reached major milestones, justifying this level of faith. Once it eventually arrived on streaming, the film found its home on HBO Max and was immediately successful. Six months on, it once again sits #1 worldwide on the platform's list of movies, highlighting its longevity. Interestingly, HBO Max isn't the only streaming service that Sinners is dominating, as it has also thrived since landing on Prime Video. As of now, it holds the #3 spot in America on Prime Video and was #2 last week, only being bested by The Wrecking Crew, a new original that just recently debuted. This data indicates that even a year after its release, audiences are still watching Sinners regularly, whether that be through rewatches or new viewers discovering the horror phenomenon. As a result, it's safe to say that Sinners was both a theatrical hit and a streaming giant, highlighting just how universally loved Coogler and Jordan's masterpiece is. With the Oscars also not too far away, Sinners is likely to stay on people's minds, especially since it is up for a historic number of awards. Sinners’ Record-Breaking Oscar Nominations Prove It Is A Modern Classic So many things have gone right for Sinners since making its big screen debut back in April 2025, and there is no sign of this slowing down ahead of the Oscars. Despite how much love the movie got from both critics and fans, there was a concern that it may not be the type of production that resonated with the Academy. This led to many fears that it may be snubbed in multiple categories, yet the opposite happened as Sinners set an Oscar nomination record. It was acknowledged in 16 different categories, including Best Picture, which it is one of the front-runners for, suggesting the film is very unlikely to go home empty-handed. Even if it won just half of the awards it's up for, Sinners would be among the most decorated movies of all time, putting it in a great position for even more success. That said, the nominations alone showcase just how big an impact this gem has had on cinema, and it looks bound to inspire numerous other projects. In less than a year, Sinners has achieved more than most films could ever dream of, and its original plot mixed with its cultural significance cements it as a modern classic. Add in the fact that an Oscar is all but guaranteed, and this horror masterpiece has a claim of being one of the 21st century's most influential films. 361 9.1/10 9/10 Sinners 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed R Horror Thriller Action Release Date April 18, 2025 Runtime 138 minutes Director Ryan Coogler Writers Ryan Coogler Producers Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, Ryan Coogler Cast See All
