Alabama's literacy mascot, SHORT the Squirrel, is embarking on a new adventure and he needs students and teachers statewide to help!MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Reading mascot
“It’s called ‘Where SHORT Loves to Read,’” said Monica Young, co-creator of SHORT the Squirrel. “We are inviting children to tell us where they love to read to inspire SHORT.”“We’re going to take their drawings and it will become our next book. So that will be written by SHORT and the children of Alabama,” Young said.
Classrooms of young readers across the state are encouraged to work together to create a picture of their favorite place to read and submit it to SHORT the Squirrel to be considered for the book. Each entry starts with a caption. The caption template is: “The _________ place for SHORT to read is _________.” Fill in the blanks with an adjective and location of the class’s choice, then draw it.Teachers will be the ones to submit the picture. Only one entry per class is allowed.
“Selected entries will require parental/guardian permission to proceed to the next stage,” the submission form reads. “SHORT the Squirrel will reach out for this information in early May if your class’ idea and art are chosen.”
