American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has withdrawn from the giant slalom event at the Alpine skiing world championships due to ongoing mental health challenges stemming from a crash in November. Although she is still planning to compete in the slalom, Shiffrin acknowledges the significant impact the injury has had on her ability to face the giant slalom course.

Mikaela Shiffrin , the American skier with a record 99 World Cup victories, has withdrawn from the giant slalom event at the Alpine skiing world championships due to post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD ) stemming from a crash in November. Shiffrin suffered a deep puncture wound and severe trauma to her oblique muscles when she fell during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont, on November 30th.

'I'm currently working through some mental obstacles in order to return to the GS start with the intensity required for racing,' Shiffrin said on Instagram. 'Honestly, I really didn't anticipate experiencing so much of this kind of mental/PTSD struggle in GS from my injury in Killington. I tried diving into the challenge, hoping to get there by Worlds, ' I figured my passion and longing to compete would outweigh the mental barriers. Maybe that will be the case over time, but I'm not there yet. Coming to terms with how much fear I have doing an event that I loved so dearly only 2 months ago has been soul-crushing.'Despite withdrawing from giant slalom, Shiffrin is still planning to compete in the slalom event, her strongest discipline, on Saturday. She will also participate in the new team combined event on Tuesday, partnering with downhill gold medalist Breezy Johnson. Shiffrin and Johnson have a long history together, having raced together since they were 11 years old. They have been roommates, competitors, and friends, and Shiffrin expressed excitement about bringing their journey full circle. The combined event requires one racer to compete in a downhill run and another in a slalom run, with their combined times determining the final result. Other US teams for the event include Lauren Macuga and Paula Moltzan; Lindsey Vonn and AJ Hurt; and Jacqueline Wiles and Katie Hensien
