Two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin is set to make her long-awaited return to the Alpine Ski World Cup on January 30th. The accomplished skier, whose 99 World Cup victories are the most by any individual in the sport, has been sidelined since November 30th after sustaining a puncture wound to her right abdomen. Shiffrin, 29, was in pursuit of her 100th World Cup win in Vermont when she crashed, tumbling through two gates before colliding with a fence.

The impact resulted in a puncture to an oblique muscle. 'It's been a little bit uncertain whether I could even return this season, but I've been able to get on snow, I've been able to train a little bit the past week or so, and I'm actually going to be heading over to Europe in the next couple of days,' she shared on 'TODAY' on Thursday. This marks the second consecutive World Cup season in which Shiffrin has faced significant time away from competition. Last season, she was sidelined for six weeks due to a crash that caused her to sprain multiple ligaments in her left knee. That injury occurred in Italy last January, on a course that will be utilized in the upcoming Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina. Shiffrin's injury this season was described as 'complex' by U.S. Ski team coach Paul Kristofic. He explained to the Associated Press earlier in January that ensuring her physical readiness during the healing process was crucial due to the nature of the injury. 'I have a stab wound, basically,' Shiffrin recalled to NBC Olympics in December. 'It's an injury I don't think many people have ever dealt with,' Kristofic added. Throughout her illustrious career, Shiffrin has dominated the World Cup circuit since 2011. In 15 seasons, she boasts five overall titles and 11 discipline titles. Slalom remains her most successful discipline, with eight titles to her name. Beyond the World Cup, Shiffrin has garnered seven gold medals at the Alpine Ski World Championships and participated in three Olympic Games. Her most recent Olympic appearance was at the Beijing Games in 2022, where she fell short of securing a medal
