The stakes of Ohio’s U.S. Senate election exploded into full view on the first day of early voting.Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown and Republican Bernie Moreno ri
ripped into each other at rallies about two hours apart on almost exactly the same spot of pavement next to the Franklin County Board of Elections. After Brown’s speech, his advocates and Moreno’s physically faced off for several minutes in a noisy, often-nasty debate.
Tensions were rekindled a couple of hours later. During a Moreno news conference, Brown fans heckled him virtually throughout the event. Moreno’s people fired back a few times. Brown told dozens cheering him that he’s become a target –- the price of challenging special interests. The incumbent noted several fact-checkers have found that Moreno has made false statements in speeches and ads. One example, per Brown: Untrue and misleading statements about the federal government’s response to the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene.
“And now all of a sudden, the United States is going to send $167 million to Lebanon. That's crazy. And I think that's what Americans are sick and tired of.”
