After reports of resignation, Fielder’s staff says she needs “time and space”
San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder 's staff announced Sunday that the first-term representative of District 9 would take a"medical leave of absence" because she"is currently navigating a mental health condition and needs time and space to recover before making any major decisions.
" The proclamation, which her staff said was made at Fielder's request, came following media reports on Friday indicating that Fielder was in a hospital and had said she would resign. Fielder’s office had previously said that Fielder “is going though an acute personal health crisis.” It did not disclose details of Fielder’s condition, but the office said “we appreciate the support people have given us and are proud of her for taking care of herself." Fielder has been a staunch progressive voice on the moderate dominated Board of Supervisors since she was elected to a four-year term in November 2024. If Fielder were to resign, Mayor Daniel Lurie would appoint an interim replacement to serve until a special election is held to determine who would fill the remainder of Fielder’s term. The statement from Fielder’s office on Sunday included messages of support from Supervisors Connie Chan, Chyanne Chen, Shamann Walton, Bilal Mahmood and Myrna Melgar and various community members. The mayor also issued a statement Friday saying that he was “sending Supervisor Fielder my best wishes for a speedy recovery." "She is a dedicated advocate for her community," Lurie said."I am encouraging everyone to give her the time and space to get better so she can do that work fully, and I’m wishing her strength and all the best for her health.” Sunday's announcement made no explicit mention of resignation. Neither the clerk nor the president of the Board of Supervisors had received any notice about Fielder's status by Monday morning from her office, which was closed for spring recess. "She has asked us to share this with the public, and has stated that she wants to regain stable health so she can thoughtfully and responsibly consider her options," read the statement, signed by Sasha Gaona, Ana Herrera and Jennifer Ferriogno, Fielder's three legislative aides. The staffers requested that news reporters give Fielder the"privacy and space necessary for healing," and asked them not to report on unsubstantiated rumors. "We urge everyone to treat this situation with the same respect and sensitivity as they would if she were recovering from any other medical emergency," the statement said. "Mental health conditions affect one in five adults nationwide," it said."Breaking the cycle of stigma of this human experience and prioritizing our health is critical, and is no different for those who have the opportunity to serve their communities in government." The statement applauded"Fielder for emphasizing the importance of self-care and resilience, and for directing us to openly share today that prioritizing and talking about mental health truly matters." Fielder's district includes Portola, Bernal Heights and the Mission, where she is a renter, according to her office's official web page. Fielder was previously an organizer for a public bank , as well as a city commissioner and the teacher of a class at San Francisco State University titled “Race, Women, and Class.” In addition, Fielder was co-director of Stop the Money Pipeline, a national coalition and campaign focused on"disrupting the flow of money to fossil fuel companies," her bio says. Fielder, whose grandparents are Mexican immigrants and Native Americans, is a citizen of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota, it states. She graduated from Stanford University in 2016 with a Bachelors of Arts in Public Policy and a Masters of Arts in Sociology. "She was only getting started, and as her appointed staff, we remain committed to fulfilling her agenda protecting our most vulnerable communities, expanding affordable housing, defending immigrant rights, strengthening public safety, promoting climate justice, ensuring small businesses can thrive, and meeting the needs of our constituents and community, among many other priorities," her staff's Sunday statement read.
