SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Giants’ first official roster move after the transaction freeze lifted wasn’t the one that was anticipated.
San Francisco on Sunday claimed catcher José Godoy off waivers from the Seattle Mariners, filling the final spot on its 40-man roster before the team had announced the signing of left-hander Carlos Rodón. Rodón arrived at the Giants facility on Saturday and picked out his jersey number — it won’t be his old No. 55, out of respect for Tim Lincecum — but the team has yet to make the move official. To add Rodón to their roster now, they will have clear space on their 40-man roster by finding another player to designate for assignment.
Godoy, who hit .162 in 16 games last year with Seattle in his only major league season, joins Joey Bart and Curt Casali as the only catchers on the 40-man roster and provides the Giants depth at the upper ranks of their organization. While the team has a surplus of young catchers at the lower levels, it was lacking backstops who could start the year at Triple-A Sacramento and possibly act as an injury replacement. Godoy, 27, has two years of options remaining.
