Manager Gabe Kapler isn’t concerned about the condensed spring schedule
“We learned so much from last year and how we treated Buster,” Kapler said, referencing the regimen of rest days for Posey that reduced the wear on his body and allowed him to produce at one of the highest levels of his career in his final year before retirement.
Rest days will be an even bigger emphasis in San Francisco’s clubhouse this season, especially with five of their projected starting nine on any given night aged 33 or older. This spring, Kapler hopes to allow some players not to come to the ballpark on certain days and might enter the season without making any of his players go a full nine innings.
“When you train for a marathon, you don’t actually run a marathon before it,” Kapler said. “So, shortened spring training does not concern me. We think about this a lot. We’ve been thinking about this a lot for the last couple years and feel like we’re well equipped to handle it.” Although the addition of the DH could conceivably help with the goal of decreasing workloads, it may not be of much use to Kapler looking to spell one of his veterans such as Evan Longoria, Crawford or Brandon Belt. They also act as the Giants’ best defenders.
“We have some candidates, no offense to anybody, that if their defense isn’t on the field, it’s not a huge blow for us,” Kapler said.“I continue to hear that, that it’s really valuable for guys to get a full day off,” Kapler said. “Sure, these guys can sit down when they’re DHing, but they’re still getting ready to hit four times. That means they’re running down into the tunnel and they’re hitting off tees and getting a lot of reps.
