The closures will remain in effect until sampling results indicating that bacterial levels meet health standards.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a beach closure notice Friday for areas near the Aqua Amarga Creek opening into Lunada Bay after the unintended release of about 30,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the water.
Specifically, the department advised people to avoid contact with ocean water and wet sand in these areas: the Aqua Amarga Creek opening into Lunada Bay; ¾ of a mile up the coast from the Aqua Amarga Creek opening into Lunada Bay, and the same distance down the coast from that opening into the bay. The department said the cause of the problem was a blocked main line in Rancho Palos Verdes that led to the discharge into Windport Canyon Creek, which leads to Aqua Amarga Creek and ends at Lunada Bay.
The closures will remain in effect until Public Health receives sampling results indicating that bacterial levels meet health standards.
