A severe thunderstorm watch was issued on Sunday evening for Kankakee County and all of northwest Indiana.
In a social media post at around 5:30 p.m., the NWS said showers and storms will continue across northeast Illinois and spread into northwest Indiana over"the next couple of hours."The watch remained in effect until 1 a.
m. for Kankakee County in Illinois, as well as Jasper, Newton, Lake, LaPorte and Porter counties in northwest Indiana. According to the National Weather Service,"a couple" tornadoes were possible, along with scattered wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour and isolated hail up to a half-inch.In a social media post at around 5:30 p.m., the NWS said showers and storms will continue across northeast Illinois and spread into northwest Indiana over"the next couple of hours." Severe storms were possible along and south of a line extending from Pontiac to Valparaiso, with the main threat being damaging winds.The primary hazards across much of the Chicago area were lightning strikes and heavy downpours that could cause flooding on roads and low-lying areas along with creeks and basements. In Kankakee County and northwest Indiana, the NWS warned of damaging winds capable of downing limbs and the possibility of tornadoes.The severe weather threat comes amid a drastic temperature divide, with a blizzard warning issued for the northwestern portion of Illinois. While Kankakee County and northwest Indiana experienced temperatures in the low-to-mid 60s on Sunday evening, areas such as Woodstock, Waukegan and Rockford, saw readings in the mid-30s., which impacts Winnebago, Boone, Ogle and Lee counties, goes into effect at 7 p.m. Sunday and will run through 1 p.m. Monday. According to the NWS, falling and blowing snow could sharply reduce visibility and create slippery road conditions, which could continue through the morning commute. Total snow accumulations of three-to-six inches, and gusty winds up to 50 miles per hour, were possible.
