COVID can more than triple the chance of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within a year of being infected, according to a new study.

Men who had even a mild case of COVID were significantly more likely than non-infected men to be diagnosed with, which is a chronic condition that affects how the body turns food into energy. Women didn't have an increased risk unless they were severely ill.

"This is definitely a concern in terms of long-term outcomes," researcher and University of British Columbia professor Naveed Z. Janjua, PhD, told"With a respiratory infection, you usually think, 'Seven or eight days and I'm done with it, that's it.' [But] here we're seeing lingering effects that are lifelong."Researchers analyzed health data from 2020 and 2021 for 629,935 people, 20% of whom were diagnosed with COVID during that time.
