FAIRBANKS, Alaska - As students and parents prepare to return to school, returning to school schedules is important for setting up success at the start of the year. That means getting on a good sleep schedule and creating daily routines before the school year starts.
Sleep needs vary by age. “Preschoolers tend to need about 13 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period and that includes naps,” Pomerantz explained. “Elementary school kids, they tend to need closer to about 12 hours of sleep.” Teenagers in middle school and high school, however, come closer to needing about 10 hours of sleep."
If your child has trouble sleeping, she recommends keeping their rooms between 65-68 degrees Fahrenheit at night and reducing screen time in the evening. “iPads, iPhones, laptops, they all are blue light, which fights against our body’s natural ability to want to get to sleep.” Alternative evening activities to help wind down include bathing, reading and listening to relaxing music.
Setting up good routines to follow daily is another part of a successful transition back to school. For younger kids, those routines will mostly come from parents. A key part of creating consistent routines is making sure everyone in the home is on the same page.
