The Supplemental Early Retirement Program is one of the measures the district is using to reduce its looming budget deficit
Teachers, parents and principals gather Jan. 16 at the La Jolla Cluster Association’s quarterly meeting at Muirlands Middle School. As the San Diego Unified School District tries to tackle a projected $112 million budget deficit for next school year while minimizing classroom impacts, the Supplemental Early Retirement Program, or SERP, is presenting an opportunity to prevent widespread layoffs.
“Teachers who have had great careers and are ready to move on to the next stage are able to do that, and then we don’t have to let go of teachers who are just starting their career,” Petterson told the Cluster Association.that SERP changes the conversation from how to conduct layoffs to how the district can reorganize staff, rehire and maintain a normal classroom experience.
Attracting adequate staffing for special education — especially for students with disabilities — historically has been a challenge for the district. As a result, the caseload for special-ed teachers tends to be high — an issue also experienced in schools across the state and nation. Lansky encouraged the district to look at the model of a job beyond its pay when conducting case studies. She also suggested a continuum of services for students who don’t fit into moderate to severe disability groups.
“She recognized a need for communication across different departments in our district, things are very siloed,” Hasselbrink said. “So they’re getting together, having weekly meetings and going to communicate with leaders every week, which is lovely to have … especially during a time where we are all worried about what’s going on.”through morning announcements, curriculum elements and monthly assemblies.
