James had unveiled the initiative on May 30.

. We recognize how important it is to represent Black businesses and communities, and we must do better. So, we’re starting now.”

Sephora also announced its commitment to the three stages of the pledge, including taking stock of the current percentage of shelf space and contracts dedicated to black-owned businesses, taking ownership of findings while understanding blindspots, and taking action to execute the plan. Black-owned businesses have historically had fewer resources than their white counterparts and the COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened the situation. According to the, the number of Black business owners has fallen by 40% since the pandemic broke out. James's proposed pledge is larger than short term change, it’s something that can change the industry forever.

Seeing Sephora's commitment, Black-owned businesses rejoiced in the comments and questioned how to apply to be a part of the 15%. Sephora was quick to respond with the official, which Black business owner can now use to get their brands on the radar and, hopefully, onto Sephora's shelves around the globe.

Sephora being the first company to commit to this pledge doesn’t mean the work stops here. More companies need to pull up and dedicate themselves to long-term change, when the protests end and when the Black Lives Matter hashtags die down on social media, what will be done internal week and months from now? Only time will tell but this is certainly a great start.
