The company – which is currently celebrating 75 years in the audio business – has finally announced the long-awaited Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 and I’ve had a chance to spend a week listening to the new earbuds so I could write this first review.

At the heart of the Momentum TW3 there is a Qualcomm Bluetooth chip with support for SBC, AAC and apt X Adaptive audio codec. With support for digital streams up to 96kHz/24-bit. The apt X Adaptive codec is incredibly versatile and can vary its bit rate on the fly, automatically stepping down for movie and gaming use to provide ultra-low-latency sound.

When it comes to battery life, Sennheiser has managed to up the playing time of the earbuds to seven hours on a single charge. With Adaptive ANC turned on, the battery life drops by just around 30 minutes. Sennheiser and Qualcomm have worked some magic on getting the energy usage down to such acceptable levels. The case stores a further 21 hours of backup power, bringing the total playing time to a very acceptable 28 hours.

Thanks to bone conduction and the ANC function, there’s no need for any sidetone. The ANC function is activated automatically for all phone calls and makes speech with these earbuds very natural sounding. The upshot is that these are probably one of the best pairs of true wireless earbuds for phone use. The clarity is superb and I would be happy to use the Momentum TW3 in place of the microphone and headphone setup that I normally use for my video meetings.

To manage the new earbuds, Sennheiser has overhauled its Smart Control smartphone app which includes a three-band graphic equalizer, as well as some handy EQ, presets. There’s also a new Soundcheck feature coming soon via a firmware update. Soundcheck creates a personal hearing profile for the user with a quick and simple test that adjusts the tone of the earbuds to suit the listener’s preferences.
